Explore Uganda’s most popular tourist destination with diverse ecosystems including Kyambura Gorge, an underground tropical forest in the middle of savanna grassland!

Day 1: Arrive in Uganda

You will be picked from Entebbe Airport by a guide driver who will bring you to Kampala for an overnight. If you arrive on time, the driver will take you around Kampala for city tours.

Day 2: Travel through Fort Portal

Our experienced guide driver will pick you up early from your hotel in Kampala and you drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park through Fort Portal, where you will stop for lunch. Fort Portal is about 3 hours' drive away from Queen Elizabeth National Park. Early arrival will allow you to go for a short game-drive into the park. You will stay at Kyambura Safari Lodge where you will be entertained at night by roaring lions and elephant visits near your banda.

Day 3 – Game Drives and Boat Launch on Kazinga

After an early breakfast, you go for a long game drive starting just in time to see game as they have their “breakfast”. This park offers variety of wildlife, be assured of a classic African safari experience, the tracks through Kasenyi, the North Kazinga Plains and the Ishasha Sector offer virtually guaranteed buffalo, antelope and elephant sightings, along with warthogs and baboons. Our experienced guide in the early morning or at dusk will help you track down a pride of lions, and maybe even the odd leopard. You will be directed to Ishasha sector to look for the famous tree-climbing lions.

In the afternoon, you will have a boat launch on Kazinga Channel, the oasis for many of the fascinating species that inhabit the park! Taking a boat tour along Kazinga Channel will give you a chance to cruise just meters from hundreds of enormous hippos and buffalos while elephants linger on the shoreline.

With a guaranteed seat on the boat and great views, there you will be entertained to over 60 bird species that can be spotted during the trip while expert ranger guides narrate the creatures’ stories.

 4-Day Cultural and community Experience

Early in the morning, visit Katwe Tourism Information Centre, with unusual lake that is far too salty to support much wildlife – though since the 16th Century it has ensured the survival of the Katwe villagers, who spend their days under the equatorial sun, walking the network of paths that cross-cross the lake and harvesting salt from its milky waters. Katwe Salt Lake Tour gives a unique insight into the fascinating yet tough process of salt mining, as well as providing an alternative income for Katwe. See villagers at work on the lake, cross the mud walkways and enter a traditional grass hut. You will also pass the nearby bird sanctuary lake, home to thousands of birds, including flamingoes from October to May.

You could be welcomed to a traditional homestead where you can enjoy cooking demonstrations that introduce you to the region’s cuisine, and there is also a trip to the local school. You will be offered a private shade to enjoy your lunchbox (packed lunch)

In the afternoon, we will take you to Kikorongo Women’s group for more cultural encounters. Kikorongo means “Too Much Sunshine” in the local language of Lukonzo – but the heat of the African plains has not diminished the energy of the Kikorongo Equator Cultural Performers! This vibrant performance, which takes place at the group’s permanent home, near the park, is a wonderful glimpse of life in Kikorongo, with dance, drama, music and fire-making. While a local interpreter explains the significance of the performances, you can sit back and watch village life unfold in front of you!

Kikorongo’s African ArtCraft Workshops will teach you how to weave baskets and bowls using natural fibers – it´s not as easy as the teachers make it look! They also demonstrate how to recycle magazines into colorful paper beads, which can be made into unique necklaces. If your own craft skills are not up to scratch, beautiful items made by the women´s group, such as baskets, bowls, purses and woven belts, are available to purchase.

Day 5: Chimp Tracking and Explosion Craters Views

The Kyambura Gorge experience is more than discovering chimpanzees in their natural environment; it will teach you about the ecosystems of Kyambura Gorge’s atmospheric “underground” rainforest, including vegetation types; bird identification and behavior; and chimp and monkey ecology.

Although chimp sightings are not guaranteed, you stand a pretty good chance of hearing and seeing our distant cousins as they are habituated. Tours last between one and three hours and start at 8 am daily. This also offers you a great birding opportunity and more game views.

In the afternoon, you will be driven between the Kabatoro gate and Queen’s Pavilion (27km drive), this gives you views of the enormous craters, circular lakes, the Rift Valley escarpment and the Kazinga channel, all in front of the mighty backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains. The 72 huge round basins scattered across the equator will give you more evidence of the Albertine Rift’s bubbling volcanic past.

Day 6: Drive Back to Kampala through Mbarara

After breakfast, you will drive back to Kampala. You will have your lunch after Mbarara town, at Igongo Cultural Center. You can add more days to enjoy Lake Mburo National Park that is just on your way or extend the journey to gorilla parks for unforgettable mountain gorilla tracking experience (check our Lake Mburo and Bwindi itineraries for details). A stopover at the equator (after Masaka town) for pictures and some souvenir shopping is memorable. Your driver/ guide will drop you back at your accommodation in Kampala (accommodation not included).
