Day-5-Rwenzori-Climbing-header

Trekking the mystic Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda is a fantastic and unique experience - the wonder of the high glaciers, the beauty of the valley of nine lakes, the bearded lichen hanging from giant heathers with a backdrop of rocky cliffs, crags and snowcapped summits. Ruwenzori mountains hike was selected by National Geographic as one of the world's best hikes. The wide variety of flora and fauna with several biospheres as you ascend through different vegetation zones creates the ultimate experience for trekking. Never before has this unique and beautiful trek been available, totally untouched and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful treks in the world.

The Rwenzori Mountains is a World Heritage Site and offers the opportunity to see nature at its best. The plant life varies from heavy tropical rainforest, bamboo forests to alpine vegetation. The scenery is truly spectacular. Above 4,500 metres, the snow and glaciers add a special dimension to the amazing views.

Day 1: Arrival in Uganda

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport, meet and greet and transfer to your hotel. Time permitting; you will take an evening city tour. You will spend a night in the capital Kampala (BB).

Day 2: Drive to Kasese

Depart Kampala for Kasese, stop in Fort Portal for lunch and continue. You will have dinner and spend a night at Equator Snow Lodge (BB).

Day 3: 8694ft

In the morning, you will transfer to Nyakalengija for weighing and porter allocation, before starting the climb of about five hours, walking through montane forest and the Bakonjo villages. Your stop will be at the first hut - Nyabitaba campsite (2650metres) for dinner and overnight. The campsite comprises a two-room wooden building, with annexed pit latrine and tap water piped from the near Lake Mahoma, which is worth a visit. There are beds in the hut and mattresses are provided. The location is beautiful with the fabulous views of the Portal Peaks in the North.

Day 4: 10990ft

Start early after breakfast and climb through the Kurt Shafer Bridge that crosses the Mobuku river confluence. This five-hour hike takes you through the bamboo, Lobelia and heath, finally ending at John Matte Hut (3350m). The hut is situated on a hillside on the banks of River Bujuku. It consists of a three-room wooden building and has a pit latrine. This is the point along the central circuit and is considered the most challenging part of the trekking.

Day 5: 13047ft

This day gets boggy as you hike through giant heather, lobelias and groundsel, through the cooking pot to the overnight hut at Bujuku. The average hiking time for this section is 4.5 - 5 hours. Overnight at Bujuku Hut (3977). The location is excellent, as it is found where the routes proceed to the Congolese side of the park, to Mount Stanley from the south and to Mount Speke from the north. It is near Lake Bujuku. Eco-toilets are available and spring water too. From this location, you have a spectacular view of Mount Baker, just in front of you, and the Stanley Plateau on the right.

Day 6: 14898ft

After breakfast, we will hike to Mount Speke and return to spend a night at Bujuku hut.

Day 7: 14898ft

Have an early breakfast and proceed on a muddy hike through steep cliffs. This is a section of giant groundsels and Lobelias that characterize the higher section of the Mountain. Ascend further to Elena Hut which acts as a base for the final assent of the highest peak of the Rwenzori Mountains. Meals and overnight at Elena Hut (4541m). This is the last point before climbing the Stanley Plateau. It is located on a rocky area of Mount Stanley at an altitude of 4.563 m. The hut is quite small and does not offer much comfort, considering the temperature and the location. It is used mainly as the staging post for ascending Mount Stanley. It overlooks directly Mount Baker and Mount Speke, though it is often submerged by the fog.

Day 8: 16761ft

This is the Big Day! Start before dawn for the chilly trek through snow and ice to climb to the 5109m Margerita Peak, the roof of the Rwenzori, before the views and the route are obscured by mist. Congratulations, you are among the few hikes to make it to the peak of the mountains of the moon - take pictures, relax and yes, you have made it! After a good rest, take a descending return through Scott Elliot Pass, which slopes the deep Kitandara Gorge to a mountain hut by the twin Kitandara lakes (4023m). Dinner and overnight at Kitandara hut.

Day 9: 3260 Meters/10695ft

Begin with a steep climb to Freshfield Pass (4282m), a spectacular spot carpeted by bright yellow mosses and offering tremendous view of Mount Stanley and Baker. The trail descends the Upper Mubuku valley. Dinner and overnight at Guy Yeoman Hut (3505m).

Day 10: Descent to Trailhead

The descent of about six hours starts to Nyabitaba through the heather zone, Mobuku River and the Bamboo forest, before heading to your final hut in the Mountains. Meals and overnight at Nyabitaba hut (2650m).

Day 11: Final slope

Take a final descent of the Rwenzori Mountains through the trail that follows the Mubuku down the cliffs of Karirupea to complete the Central Circuit at Nyabitaba Hut and continue to the trailhead at Ruboni for greater comforts. Overnight at Ruboni Community Camp.

Day 12: Drive to Kibale Forest National Park

After a two-hour drive to Fort Portal and a stopover for lunch, continue on an hour's drive to Kibale Forest National Park, where you will stay at a nice lodge in the middle of the forest. Overnight at Primate Lodge (FB).

Day 13: Chimpanzee tracking & swamp walk

After an early morning briefing with park authorities, enter a different world for a primate encounter! Kibale Forest National Park boasts the highest number of primate species in the world, including the illusive chimpanzees. An experienced forest ranger will take you chimp tracking. Besides the chimps, you might also see other monkey species, including the Red Tailed Monkey, Olive Baboon, Black and White Colobus and the Blue Monkey - Kibale is indeed a primate capital of the world! The birdlife in the forest is also inexhaustible and includes the beautiful Great Blue Turaco.

After a great primate experience, return to your lodge for lunch and a good rest as birds sing for you. In the afternoon, drive out of the forest for a swamp walk (2-3 hours) through grassland, small communities and some beautiful scenery, where the locals will greet you with passionate waves. The highlight is catching a glimpse of the Great Blue Turaco! Overnight at Primate Lodge (FB)

Day 14: Return to Kampala

After breakfast, you will drive back to Kampala; driving though beautiful tea plantation and green countryside. You will have enough time in Kampala to do any shopping and city tours. If your return is on Wednesday, Friday or Sunday, we will arrange a cultural evening experience with Ndere Cultural Troupe.

Day 15: Transfer to Entebbe and departure
